And the credit card has been maxed out.

Remember that includes the $2,000 millions Puerto Rico is getting under the table through Obama's IRS bailout.

And it does not include the coming obligations from Health Department and the retirement systems.

Where is the money going to come to close the gap?

Krueger outlined a couple of areas where you could get some savings, as for example, reducing the teacher/student ratio or cutting half a billion from the University of Puerto Rico. Although reducing $500 millions from the University of Puerto Rico could be somewhat disruptive, to say the least.

What Puerto Rico needs is to get those $2,000 millions through incorporation.

That is the kind of structural change that will put the economy on solid ground. Everyone will be filing a federal 1040 tax return to claim their credits, and the 100,000 public workers that need to be moved to the private sector will have a smoother period of transition.

As the economy improves, Puerto Rico will become more and more productive and less and less dependent on the United States. Then it will be in a position to ask for statehood.

As it is now, ni lo sueñen.

Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17855803050326528177noreply@blogger.com
